Owls in West Virginia: Where to See Them and How to Identify Them

West Virginia's dense forests and rugged terrain provide prime owl habitat. The Monongahela National Forest is the largest block of public land, offering extensive mixed hardwood forests that support barred and great horned owls. State parks such as Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley, and Babcock State Park also host good populations. Owls are most active at dawn and dusk, though some species like the great horned owl hunt well into the night. The four most likely owls in West Virginia are the great horned, barred, Eastern screech, and barn owl. Great horned owls are large with prominent ear tufts and deep hoots. Barred owls are among the most frequently seen due to their tolerance of daylight and proximity to human areas. Great horned owls are widespread but harder to spot. Eastern screech owls are common in woodlots and suburbs, often using nest boxes. Short-eared owls appear in winter in open fields, and saw-whet owls pass through during migration but are rarely seen.

Look for large stick nests high in deciduous trees, often in forks of main trunks. Great horned owls often take over red-tailed hawk or crow nests. Barred owls prefer cavities in mature trees.
