Owls in Virginia: Where to See Them and How to Identify Them

In Virginia, owls sightings usually improve when you slow down and match your first stop to where in the state sightings are most likely. A short walk with one clear viewing plan often beats covering too much ground, especially when habitat changes fast from open edges to brush, wetlands, timber, shoreline, or neighborhood cover.

Late winter through early spring (February to April) is peak calling season for mating pairs. Dawn and dusk are your prime windows. On moonlit winter nights, great horned owls often hunt earlier. Summer can be good for fledgling activity. Always use a red flashlight to avoid disturbing them.

Focus on size, ear tufts, and call. Great horned owls are large with distinct ear tufts and deep hoots. Barred owls are smaller, no ear tufts, and have the classic “who cooks for you” call. Start with Shenandoah National Park (Skyline Drive overlooks at dusk). The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is excellent for barred owls. In the coastal plain, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge has short-eared owls in winter. Huntley Meadows Park near Alexandria is reliable for barred and great horned. In winter, owls are more vocal and visible as they defend territories. Spring is nesting season: young owls beg loudly in April and May. Summer heat makes them less active during the day, but they still hunt at dawn. Fall is a good time for migrating short-eared owls along the coast.
