Foxes in New Mexico: Where to Look and What Signs to Watch For

Gray foxes prefer wooded or brushy areas, often near rivers or streams, like the Gila National Forest and the Jemez Mountains. Kit foxes stick to arid grasslands and scrublands, especially in the southern part of the state around the Jornada del Muerto. Check our fox species overview for more on their ranges.

Foxes are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk. During hot summer months, they may also be seen early morning before the sun gets high. In winter, midday sightings are rare but possible if you're near a den.

Fox tracks are oval, about 1.5 to 2.5 inches long, with four toes and a small heel pad. They often leave a straight-line trail. Look for scat that is pointed at one end and contains fur or seeds. Dens are usually holes 8-12 inches wide with a mound of dirt outside.
