Raccoons in New Jersey: where to look and what signs to watch for

Raccoons inhabit every county of New Jersey, but they concentrate near fresh water. Look along the Passaic, Raritan, and Delaware rivers, plus smaller creeks in the Pine Barrens. They also thrive in suburban parks and golf courses. In the northwest highlands, hardwoods around lakes and streams hold good populations. Start at Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge or the Delaware Water Gap area.

In New Jersey, raccoons sightings usually improve when you slow down and match your first stop to where the animal is most likely in the state. A short walk with one clear viewing plan often beats covering too much ground, especially when habitat changes fast from open edges to brush, wetlands, timber, shoreline, or neighborhood cover.

Raccoons are nocturnal, so your best window is dawn and dusk (crepuscular periods). Summer nights are most active, but they are also seen in winter during warm spells. In early spring, they leave winter dens to forage. Use a red flashlight to avoid startling them. Mating season peaks in February, which can increase movement.

Raccoon tracks resemble tiny human handprints: five toes on both front and hind feet, often with forward-pointing claws. Look for them in mud along stream banks. Raccoons are omnivores that eat fruits, nuts, insects, and human refuse. In summer, seek out berry bushes and cornfields. In fall, they focus on acorns under oaks. Near campgrounds, garbage cans attract them. This feeding behavior makes edges between woods and open fields productive spots.

Raccoons adapt easily to human presence. Actually, suburban neighborhoods often have higher densities than remote forests. Look for dens in hollow trees, abandoned buildings, or even chimneys. Urban raccoons are bolder but still avoid direct contact. Always watch from a distance to avoid conflicts.
