Coyotes in Massachusetts: where to look and what signs to watch for

Coyotes are widespread across the state, from the Berkshires to Cape Cod. They thrive in mixed landscapes: farmlands, woodlands, and suburban edges. Coyotes are larger than red foxes, with a longer, more dog-like face. Gray foxes are smaller and have a black-tipped tail. Domestic dog tracks show a wider heel pad and splayed toes. Coyotes trot in a straight line, unlike the zigzag of a dog.
