Owls in Idaho: Where to See Them and How to Identify Them

Owls in Idaho favor a mix of forests and open land. Look for Great Horned Owls in ponderosa pine stands and along the Snake River plain. Barn Owls often roost in old barns and silos in the agricultural valleys. The Panhandle forests, around Coeur d'Alene, offer good odds for Barred Owls. In Idaho, owls sightings usually improve when you slow down and match your first stop to where in the state sightings are most likely. Use the state wildlife hub and the route guide to narrow your first area, then check access, weather, and distance before you settle in. A short walk with one clear viewing plan often beats covering too much ground, especially when habitat changes fast from open edges to brush, wetlands, timber, shoreline, or neighborhood cover.

Year-round, but winter is excellent because leaves are down, making roosting owls easier to spot. Dusk and dawn are the most active times. Listen for territorial calls in late winter (January to March) when owls are pairing up. For night owls, a full moon can help, but your best bet is the hour after sunset.

Owls have a large, round head, forward-facing eyes, and a short, hooked beak. Unlike hawks (see /animals/hawks), owls often have ear tufts (Great Horned) or a heart-shaped face (Barn Owl). Their flight is silent and moth-like, while hawks flap and glide. At dusk, look for a chunky shape perched on a fence post or tree limb.

Idaho hosts at least nine species. The most common are Great Horned Owl, Barn Owl, Western Screech-Owl, and Northern Pygmy-Owl. In higher elevations, look for Northern Saw-whet Owls and Boreal Owls. Learn their calls first. Great Horned Owls have a deep, rhythmic hoot. Barn Owls screech. Scan tree trunks and branches for a silhouette. Look for whitewash (droppings) on the ground and pellets at the base of roost trees. Move slowly and quietly. Bring binoculars and a flashlight with a red filter to avoid disturbing them.
