Bobcats in California: Where to Look and What Signs to Watch For

Bobcats are widely distributed across California, from the coastal ranges to the Sierra Nevada and even the Mojave Desert. They favor habitats with dense brush, rocky outcrops, and edges between forests and open areas. The best odds for sightings are in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the Coast Ranges, and the chaparral regions of Southern California. Bobcats are crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. They may also be seen during midday in cooler months or when raising young. If you want to spot one, plan your hike for early morning or late afternoon. During summer heat, they tend to rest in shady spots, so look for them near water sources at these times.

Start by scanning for tracks in soft soil or mud. Bobcat tracks are about 2 inches wide and round, with no claw marks (they retract their claws). Look also for scat that is dark, segmented, and often contains fur or bone fragments. Scratches on trees or logs are territorial marks. If you find a fresh scrape, a bobcat is likely nearby. Bobcat tracks are asymmetrical and show four toes and a large heel pad. Unlike domestic dogs, the toes are closer together and the heel pad has a distinct two-lobed front edge. Scat is similar to a domestic cat's but larger, often placed on trails or elevated spots like logs. Finding these signs confirms that bobcats are using the area.

Stay calm and keep your distance. Do not approach or corner the animal. Make yourself look bigger by raising your arms and speak firmly. Bobcats usually avoid humans and will retreat. If it does not leave, back away slowly. Never run, as that may trigger a chase. Report aggressive behavior to local wildlife authorities.
