Foxes in Arizona: Where to Look and What Signs to Watch For

Two species call Arizona home: the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) and the kit fox (Vulpes macrotis). Gray foxes are more widespread, found from the Sonoran Desert up into pine forests. Kit foxes stick to open, arid grasslands and scrub in the southeastern and central parts of the state. Both are small, dog-like canids with bushy tails.

In Arizona, foxes sightings usually improve when you slow down and match your first stop to where the animal is most likely in the state. A short walk with one clear viewing plan often beats covering too much ground, especially when habitat changes fast from open edges to brush, wetlands, timber, shoreline, or neighborhood cover.

Gray foxes favor rocky terrain, canyons, and riparian areas along rivers like the Verde and Salt. Kit foxes prefer sandy or gravelly flatlands in places such as the San Simon Valley or near Willcox. Check Arizona's wildlife areas for public land with mixed habitat. Start in parks like Saguaro National Park (west unit) or the Tonto National Forest.

Both species are crepuscular, so dawn and dusk are your best windows. In summer, early morning is more reliable. Winter activity can extend into daylight, especially in colder microclimates. Fox tracks are small (1.5–2.5 inches), oval, with four toe pads and a small heel pad. Gray fox tracks are slightly larger than kit fox. Look for scat that resembles dog droppings but is smaller, often filled with fur or seeds. Dens are often hidden under boulders or in brush piles. Gray foxes can climb trees, so check for claw marks on low trunks.

Gray foxes have a salt-and-pepper gray coat, a black stripe down the tail, and reddish sides. Kit foxes are pale yellowish-gray, with huge ears and a black-tipped tail. Gray foxes are stockier; kit foxes look more delicate. Both are about the size of a house cat.
